Opportunities to Serve

Grace Episcopal Church
Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Grace Notes
1 February 2018

Opportunities to serve:  One of our discussions at the Parish Annual Meeting related to how we are blessed in and by the many servants of Christ who offer of their time and talents in this parish.  We do have specific needs to highlight:
Church Door is a new application on the parish website, providing a way for members of the parish to communicate on topics of interest, including:  (a) prayer requests; (b) talents (offers of expertise and services to share); (c) help—recommendations and suggestions for assistance; and (d) items—tools or equipment to lend or to borrow, sell or share.  This social media application will allow us to continue to build community, but to do so we need a site manager, someone with familiarity with social media apps who can keep the site up-to-date and within its designated boundaries.  Please contact the office to explore how you can help!  Please, as well, explore the site.  This will require you to establish an account at https://www.gracesheboygan.com/churchdoor/ .  (All access to the site will be password-protected.)
Grace Abounds support:  Our content and reach continues to grow!  We have been blessed in the technical and production support provided to date, but need more help.  For every two minutes of video content posted, one hour of production time is involved.
This is a great opportunity to learn as well as to serve.  If you want to explore how to be involved and help, contact Mthr. Michele.
Stewardship:  As detailed at our meeting, we need a self-starter to manage our stewardship effort in 2018.  This will involve planning and communicating, and managing at a strategic level.  Please explore the vision for this with Dcn. Paul.
Prison and Jail ministry:  If you can write to a parishioner in prison, and/or if you can contribute to funds for relief (commissary items, bibles, etc.) for those in prison and jail, contact Fr. Karl.

Grace abounds:  Please thank:
§  Steve and Polly Schmeiser for the Parish Annual Meeting brunch.
§  Dcn. Paul Aparicio, Nicci Beeck and Nick Whitford for serving as meeting tellers.
§  Samantha Lesczykowski and Pat Ford Smith for preparing the hand-out materials for the annual meeting.

Special “Thank You’ s” :  A supply of Thank You note cards can be found on the table at the back of church nave.  When someone in the parish does something special, take the time to write them a personal note.  Also, from time to time, think about who you might want to thank for ongoing service, and let them know you have noticed!

Call for ContributionsIf you have a spiritual reflection to share, or want to point your fellow worshipers toward a resource, submit your contributions to Fr. Karl (by email) by Wednesday in the week of publication.

Don’t forget “Something Extra for Grace”:  Supplemental giving envelopes can be found in pews.  If you want to give something extra, please use an envelope to ensure that you are credited.

Lenten Series:  In addition to the Lenten Meditations which will allow you to make your own pilgrimage through Lent with the insights of Scripture, prayer, and the devotional meditations offered by your fellow parishioners, please plan to gather on Friday evenings, 23 February—23 March.  We’ll begin with Stations of the Cross at 5:30, followed by a simple supper at 6 p.m.  (Please sign up if you can help with a supper.)  We’ll continue 6:30—7:30 with a program in which we’ll explore the ministries the parish shares in in the wider community, and how you can help.  Presentations will be made by:
§  LoveINC:  opportunities to serve; service which is ongoing; the vision for 2018—19; questions and answers.
§  Sheboygan County Interfaith Organization:  opportunities to serve; service which is ongoing; the vision for 2018—19; questions and answers.
§  Freedom Cry:  the sexual trafficking problem in Sheboygan; how to help.
§  Samaritan’s Hand:  the opioid abuse epidemic in Sheboygan; how to help.
§  Good News Jail and Prison Ministry:  opportunities to serve.
Come to pray!  Come enjoy fellowship!  Come to learn!

§  Diocesan Clergy Retreat, February 5-7:  There will be no Mass on these days.
§  Book Study on Redemptive Compassion: The group study of the book Redemptive Compassion: The Defining Difference has begun. The eight-week class will meet on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. consecutively, through March 4; however, there will be no class today because of the Parish Annual Meeting.
§  Deacon School:  The diocesan Deacon School courses in Old Testament (taught by Fr. Glen Kanestrom of St. Paul’s, Marinette) and Church History (taught by Fr. Karl Schaffenburg of Grace, Sheboygan) have begun. Classes meet 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, January – May, and September – December.
Auditors are welcome. If you wish to audit deacon school, contact Fr. Karl to receive details.  Note:  Those in formation for the diaconate pay tuition.  Auditors are requested to contribute to the cost of the school, but if the offering of a donation would restrict your attendance be assured that a donation is voluntary.
§  Lenten Meditations:  Our book of meditations, written by parishioners, has become a treasured tradition to enter into the Lenten season. This year, the 2nd-5th grade Sunday School class will also participate to joyfully remind us what the scripture looks like through the eyes of a child.
To participate:
Choose from the scripture readings on the Narthex table. All are welcome to choose more than one. Sign your name on the clipboard next to the corresponding scripture listed.
Read and reflect on the scripture for the scripture(s) chosen.
Write a meditation based on what resonated with you, or you feel called to share based upon the readings.
      • The meditation can be 10 words or 300 words (maximum, please); there are no rules and no right or wrong ways.
Submit your meditation to Nicci nbeeck@gracesheboygan.com by February 5 to allow production time. These meditations will be published in print and online before Lent begins. In addition, meditations can be read aloud on Grace Abounds, as part of our podcast series.
§  Signing of the Tripartite Covenant: We need four lay members of the parish to attend mass on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at St. Dominic and St. Peter Lutheran Church (two members at each church) as representatives of Grace Church to sign the Tripartite Covenant. Mass at both churches begins at 10:30 a.m. Please call Grace Church office if you would like to serve in this capacity.
§  Shrove Tuesday Feast before the Fast: Shrove Tuesday is February 13. We will be having a potluck supper following a 5:30pm Mass. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend this festive occasion. There is a sign-up sheet on the table in the Narthex.
§  Ash Wednesday: This first day of Lent, on February 14, is a day of fasting and penitence. We will observe this day with Mass and Imposition of Ashes at 12:10 p.m., and Solemn Mass with Imposition of Ashes at 6:00 p.m. This is a holy day and a wonderful way to begin your Lenten observance.
§  Stations of the Cross, Simple Suppers and Teaching:  Beginning on the second Friday in Lent (February 23) we will meet each Friday at 5:30 p.m. for Stations of the Cross, followed by a simple supper and Christian formation. Our program this year will feature presenters from community organizations that Grace Church supports.  Please sign up on the sheets in the Narthex so we will know how much food needs to be prepared.
§  Bible Challenge: Videos for all 52 weeks of the year are now available on Grace Abounds. If you take this challenge, you will find that in one year you will read all of the Bible! This will require less than an hour of your time, six days a week.
A schedule of readings are provided on the parish website, along with weekly study summaries and a weekly video summary of the readings. If you need a good study bible for the challenge, contact the parish office. When we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the mantle of the Lord does fall upon us. We are equipped to discern God’s will and to lead others to know and love and serve the Lord.
§  Flower Schedule for 2018: Giving the gift of flowers is a wonderful way to remember a loved one or to offer thanksgiving for your blessings. If you wish to sign up for a specific Sunday, the Flower Schedule is available on the table in the Narthex. More than one person can sign up for each Sunday.
