Notes
25 May 2017
Today is Ascension Day, the day on which we
commemorate Jesus’ ascension into heaven to assume His universal kingship (Lk.
24.50—53; Acts 1.6—11). Before assuming
His throne, Jesus promises His disciples that they shall receive power, that
the Holy Spirit will come and grant power that the Church may witness to all
that Jesus has revealed and taught—to the Good News.
There is much that I could write about
Ascension, although I could certainly not improve upon such hymns as no. 435,
“At the Name of Jesus” and no. 544, “Jesus shall reign where’re the sun”. Rather than disappoint, I want to call
attention to an important ministry which begins tomorrow and lasts through
Pentecost, a novena of prayer as part of The
Global Wave of Prayer. The resources
which describe and outline this initiative are found here:
As described on the Global Wave website:
Thy
Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement, which invites Christians around the
world to pray between Ascension and Pentecost for more people to come to know
Jesus Christ. What started out as an invitation from the Archbishops’ of
Canterbury and York in 2016 to the Church of England has grown into an
international and ecumenical call to prayer.
The
hope is that:
- people will commit to pray with God’s
world-wide family—as a church, individually or as a family;
- churches will hold prayer events, such
as 24-7 prayer, prayer stations and prayer walks, across the UK and in
other parts of the world;
- people will be empowered through prayer
by the Holy Spirit, finding new confidence to be witnesses for Jesus
Christ.
What shall we do as a parish? We invite all to pray the novena. We will include the novena prayers in the
daily office of prayer in the parish.
(Join us!)
Pray
about this: Are you called to join in a 24 hour prayer
vigil, in which we will lift up those in Sheboygan who do not know Jesus
Christ? If you are, consider what 1 hour
you can agree to be a prayer warrior during the time period 12:01 a.m. on Saturday,
3 June, to 12:00 midnight on Saturday, 3 June (i.e., for the entire Eve of Pentecost). If you can serve for 1 hour, join with
us! A signup sheet is to be found at the
parish (in the narthex).
Grace
abounds: Please thank:
§ Bill and Deb Gagin,
and Paul and Andrea Aparicio for the Sunday coffee hours.
§ Sutton Cecil, Julie
Davidson, Jennifer Pawlus and Mary Snyder for janitorial help.
§ Polly Beebe, Cathy
Green, Sandie Palmer, Pat Ford Smith, and Nick Whitford for administrative
help.
Special “Thank You’ s” : A supply of Thank You note cards can be found
on the table at the back of church nave.
When someone in the parish does something special, take the time to
write them a personal note. Also, from
time to time, think about who you might want to thank for ongoing service, and
let them know you have noticed!
Call
for Contributions: If you
have a spiritual reflection to share, or want to point your fellow worshipers
toward a resource, submit your contributions to Fr. Karl (by email) by
Wednesday in the week of publication.
Don’t
forget “Something Extra for Grace”:
Supplemental giving envelopes can be found in pews. If you want to give something extra, please
use an envelope to ensure that you are credited.

Christ hath a garden walled around, a

Chosen by love and fenced by grace
from out the world’s wide wilderness.
Like trees of spice his servants
stand, there planted by his mighty hand;
By Eden’s gracious streams, that flow
to feed their beauty where they grow.
Awake, O wind of heaven, and bear
their sweetest perfume through the air:
Sit up, O south, the boughs that
bloom, till the belovèd Master come:
That he may come, and linger yet among
the trees that he hath set;
That he may evermore be seen to walk
amid the springing green.
