Inaugurated Reign

Grace Episcopal Church
Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Grace Notes
10 May 2018

Today is Ascension Day, a Principal Feast of the Church which commemorates Jesus’ bodily ascension to heaven, recorded at Acts 1.6—11.  What is described is dramatic, certainly, but in focusing on the inauguration of Jesus’ reign we should pay close attention to how we are players in this cosmic drama.  Before He ascends to His Father, Jesus tells His disciples “[Y]ou shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1.8).
God promises and gives His disciples power to testify to the Good News.  In Acts 1.8 we encounter the “programmatic verse” for the book, and outline of what will happen in the rest of Acts.  First the Holy Spirit comes upon the believers (at Pentecost).  Then Peter and James and John testify in Jerusalem, as does Stephen, the first martyr.  Then Philip encounters the Ethiopian eunuch in Samaria, and Peter encounters Cornelius the centurion in Joppa (in Samaria), and then Paul begins the missionary journeys that will take the Good News to “the end of the earth” (it’s center, in Rome).
God’s grants this power and this charge to us now, to be witnesses to all.  At Ascension we celebrate that Jesus has assumed His throne.  He reigns, and much of our witness is comprised in how we are seen to recognize this reign.  Jesus never tells His disciples to worry about how they are going to fit in.  What He send them to do—and what He send us to do—is guaranteed to result in them and us not just fitting into the culture around us.  To the extent that the Church ever became comfortable with the power structures of this world, it is because she became lukewarm in her faith.  We are not called to be lukewarm, but to be on fire; on fire with the Holy Spirit bestowed at Pentecost, and bestowed to each one of us in baptism.
Be seen to be different.  That is how you shall be a witness to the inaugurated reign of Jesus Christ.  You are not given a bit role as “fifth business” in an out-of-the-way amateur theatrical production, but a crucial role in the most important drama of all Creation—the coming of the kingdom of God.  You shall carry the drama forward under the direction of a the supreme dramatist who is both Author and director.

Silence is Golden

Grace Episcopal Church
Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Grace Notes
3 May 2018

Silence is golden.  So we are told.  And yet the experience of silence is rare enough in a world in which busyness and noise are pretty much taken for granted; rare enough that when silence is encountered it is perceived by some as threatening.  The conceit of the current hit movie A Quiet Place involves how silence becomes a matter of survival, and since the movie is so quiet there are reports of audience members becoming very annoyed with each other whenever noise is made (popcorn, candy wrappers, etc.)
In our liturgy we seek to involves all of the senses:
§  Sight in color and imagery and iconography.
§  Hearing in the spoken word and in music (and in silence).
§  Taste in “tast[ing] and see[ing] that the Lord is good” in the Blessèd Sacrament.
§  Smell in the aroma of frankincense.
§  Touch in the Blessèd Sacrament and in the passing of the peace of Christ.
To this compilation of experiences we add that of movement.
The intention in liturgy is to involve the whole person, and to this end we are going to begin to cultivate our “sixth sense”, the awareness of Presence.  To this end we are introducing a practice of liturgical silence.  On Sundays, between the end of the sermon and the beginning of the Creed, we will pause for two minutes of silence, to allow ourselves to cultivate an awareness of what God is speaking to us in the Scripture and sermon we have just experienced.  In silence we can do things like:
§  Focus on whatever word or phrase of Scripture sticks in our minds, and ponder what God might be saying to us that these words or this phrase are highlighted to us.
§  Offer thanksgiving for what God is doing and what He has done.
§  Call to mind the ways in which we have alienated ourselves from God and from God’s will, that when it comes time to offer confession we may make a good confession.
§  Sit in quiet adoration of the Presence of Jesus Christ; or
§  None of the above: just sitting in silence to listen and to see what might be revealed in silence.
When we are more aware of God we become more aware of His love, His counsel.  We become individuals and a people who can discern where and to what we are being called.  We become people who, in offering prayer, pray from the heart.  We begin to go deeper into God’s life.
Let God fill the silence.

"Let me tell you how I messed up."

Grace Episcopal Church
Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Grace Notes
26 April 2018

Yesterday we celebrated the feast of St. Mark the Evangelist.  Despite the order of books in the Bible, Mark’s gospel is understood to have been the first written, for much of Matthew and Luke are based upon it, even to the point of direct quotation.  Mark is widely equated with the young man who ran off naked when Jesus was arrested (Mk. 14.51—52).  He is described as the cousin of Barnabas (Col. 4.10).  It is related that after the first mission journey, from which Mark returned alone, Paul and Barnabas quarreled over whether to include him in a second journey, with Paul leaving with Silas, and Barnabas and Mark proceeding to Cyprus (Acts 15.37—40).  Importantly, Peter describes Mark as “my son” (1 Pet. 5.13), and Church Tradition early on attests to Mark’s gospel account being based in large part on Peter’s dictation before his own martyrdom in Rome (ca. A.D. 64—67).
In the plenitude of God’s grace, consider the testimony of how it is that Peter ended up as Mark’s mentor.  Peter—who three times denied Jesus during the Lord’s passion—was by God’s grace appointed to be present to Mark as a father in faith who could say, in effect, “You think you messed up?  That you didn’t have ‘the right stuff’ for mission?  Let me tell you about how God has used me despite my own failings.”
In the plenitude of God’s grace, consider how God has appointed another to mentor your own faith and/or how you are appointed to mentor the faith of another.  To be truly a father or mother of another in faith will not involve how one might boast of anything, but will involve how one can share in the smallness of self, in the humbling of self, necessary to be filled by God’s Spirit.  Peter as a man did not have the courage to proclaim the Christ to the High Priest, but Peter as the apostle empowered by God became the bold declarer of the Good News to all of the Sanhedrin and to all of the Church.
What you have to share in faith with one who is struggling will involve how your own weakness, doubts, failings have allowed you to recognize God’s mercy; how God delights in you as His beloved son or daughter because of the image and likeness of God in which you were created.  The smallness of heart that will allow you to share your own failings will be filled by the Holy Spirit, and it will be then that you can say, like Peter, “Let me tell you how I messed up.”  It will be then that your child in faith can be given the faith to become one who, like Mark, will lead others to know and love and serve God.

Grace abounds:  Please thank:
§  Greg and Brenda Burgett for the Sunday coffee hour on 15 April.  Apologies for the oversight last week!
