Life Together in Giving

Grace Episcopal Church
Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Grace Notes
2 October 2013

This Sunday we kick off the 2014 stewardship campaign. The process will be completed on New Consecration Sunday, 10 November.  The opening and closing Sundays will feature our former seminarian, The Rev. Dcn. Charleston Wilson, as preacher.
The budgeting process for 2014 is running in parallel, to allow for a good appreciation of the financial picture, but in this context it is necessary to remind that we are over $22,000 behind on current year pledges.
It is vitally important to understand that an increase in the budget needs for 2014 is likely, because in order to manage the 2013 deficit we have deferred certain expenses in physical plant maintenance.  Despite unscheduled expenses (water damage, etc.) we have succeeded in holding spending to a figure consistently below budget, but just.  Even if all 2013 pledges were paid in full, and on time, we would still be running a year-end deficit of about $19,000.  This is not sustainable, and in our 2014 stewardship campaign we will need to grow in how we give.
Giving in support of the ministry of the Church is not optional.  We cannot be consumers only.  Our Lord enjoins us to an active faith, and this activity is expressed partly in the giving of time, talent, and treasure.  Remember, Jesus does not say that our treasure will be where our heart is; He says that our heart will be where our treasure is (Mtt. 6.21).  In other words, we must choose where we invest value, and we are called to invest value in the mission of the Church.
The biblical standard for giving is the tithe.  Whether you choose to calculate this on a gross or net basis is your decision, although recall that when Jesus enjoins that we are to “render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s” (Mtt. 22.21) He is talking about taxes, and He makes clear that this reckoning is separate from rendering unto God the things that are God’s.  However you calculate your support, consider that our campaigns have focused on current needs.  Later in 2014 we will need to consider how to plan to raise funds for capital (e.g., a new roof) in the coming years.  Deferring needed maintenance exact a price in the medium and long term.
It is traditional in the Church to be a bit embarrassed in talking about money.  There is no need to be.  This is just one aspect of how we live together and serve together.  If you are suffering from financial difficulties that are having an impact on how you can meet your existing obligations, or take on a new one, then this can be discussed in confidence with Fr. Karl.  We are here to serve each other, and we will all at some time need each other.  We live together as the Church.  Let us focus on sharing that proceeds in all directions.

Grace Abounds:  Please thank Barb MacEwen and the Apparicio family for the wonderful coffee hours this past Sunday.

Faith Alive reflection:       The first six or so times I heard and read about Faith Alive coming to Grace, I pretty much ignored it, and I bet I'm not alone in that. After a while, though, I got curious and wanted to know more: what is Faith Alive, really? What really happens?
I wasn't afraid of a “Holy Roller” experience. In fact, I was kind of hoping the weekend would at least border on that. I was hungry for renewal. The last few years have been very difficult, and while I know Christ is with me all the time, I don't always feel him and I miss that. So, even though I still didn't have a clear picture of what to expect, when the opportunity came to sign up I did.
No, there weren't tambourines or people talking in tongues, shouting “AMEN” or “falling out in the spirit.” The Holy Spirit must have known that wouldn't be received well at Grace. Instead, the Holy Spirit gently and lovingly moved among us and touched each one of us where we needed it most. For some, like me, it was incredibly emotional. I am very grateful I attended. I look forward to the fruits of our experience and I pray that next time, we'll see you there also.
―Martha
Following Up on the Weekend

Two different meetings have been scheduled.  The First called, “Talk & Share,” will be held monthly in the Education Hour between services the second week of the month (in October, it’d be the 13th) running between 9:10ish & 10:00 am.  It will consist of a process much like the FA weekend; counting off & going off in small groups to discuss several open-ended questions that would encourage people to share on a Spiritual Level.  The same expectations will be in effect:  begin with introductions; there should be no attempts to 'fix'; listening with non-judgmental attitudes; permission given not to share; maintaining confidentiality, & possible closing prayer(s) of some nature.  It’s a new beginning, open to anyone.  There willl be facilitators & a few questions to guide the small group discussions.

The Second meeting will be held the last weekend of October the 27th, at the same time between the services, but will be of a different nature.  At the follow-up meeting concluding the weekend there were a number of very focused suggestions for small groups aloud & in the evaluations: among them were book studies, mutual support groups, service (outreach) groups, entertainment (social groups) as well as others.  This meeting will help facilitate the establishing of these groups & be a one-time event. People interested in these groups would get a chance to meet & plan how to proceed with organizing themselves.
John Davis will be making an announcement about the meetings at both services this coming Sunday, the 4th, & signup sheets for both events will be available.
No doubt there will be issues to be addressed as we proceed, but it seems to me to be a timely & effective way to get started.  May the Holy Spirit, guide, guard, & energize this process.

A Lively Faith

Grace Episcopal Church
Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Grace Notes
26 September 2013

Where to start?  The manifestations of real growth in the Spirit demonstrated during the Faith Alive weekend were many and profound, so the question of “where to start” can be seen to be two-fold:  First, how can we hope to describe the blessings of the weekend?, and Where are we called now?
The blessings of the weekend were seen first in the level of participation, which exceeded fondest hopes.  For example, at the follow-up meeting on Sunday, over fifty people showed up.  They came back to church at the end of a long weekend to discern and discuss the second aspect of “Where to start?”  Where do we go form here?
The most common theme in the follow-up meeting was that the small group meetings during the Faith Alive weekends allowed for the most profound spiritual sharing and growth, and our first follow-up step will be, therefore, to identify how to foster small group development in the parish.  Your help is needed.  What do you want?  A book study group?  A support group?  A social group?  There are many models and opportunities, and the Follow-up Committee is working now to identify these and to foster the roll-out of renewed and new ministries.  If you are looking for how you can participate, if you have an idea for a ministry or a group, contact Bob Hanlon, Ed Clabots, John Davis, Nancy Yurk or John Ambelang to discuss your idea or question.
A second common theme related to how participants were able to get to know other members of the parish in ways that were new, by sharing.  How can we foster this kind of outreach and growth?  What part do you have to play?  The more we engage in sharing, the more we build trust, to allow for even greater sharing and mutual growth.  When you have an idea, stop by the parish and share it.  We’ll put it in the mix, and guided by the Holy Spirit we will see a renewed and new spiritual groundedness at Grace that allows His grace to be shared with all.

Grace Abounds:  There are too many people to thank for how successful the Faith Alive weekend was, and publishing a long list runs the risk of oversight—so thank God!
Please thank John Ambelang, Pat Ford Smith, Jane Hanson, Mary Massey, and Martha Shad for manning the office during the past two weeks.
Please thank Bryan Stenz for wonderful coffee hours this past Sunday.
We have sent formal thanksgivings to the clergy and people of St. Paul’s in Plymouth and St. Peter’s in Sheboygan Falls, who helped prepare and serve food for the weekend.  Our own team was led by Bernie Markevitch, with help from Barb MacEwen, Nicci Beeck and Bryan Stenz.

Call for Contributions:  Jane Hanson’s reflection on the Faith Alive weekend (below) highlights that this is a parish blog.  If you have a spiritual reflection to share, or want to point your fellow worshippers toward a resource, submit your contributions to Fr. Karl (by email) by Wednesday (noon) each week.

Faith Alive reflection:  It was with some expectation, a little curiosity and just a touch of doubt that I began the "Faith Alive" experience.  It was not long before it became apparent that it was a
journey worth taking, with insights worth discovering.  The greatest of those being a part of sharing the hopes, the hurts, the needs of my Grace Church family in a small group setting.  The capable leaders of the Faith Alive team gently led us into allowing the Holy Spirit to touch our hearts.  That touch was reflected in the trust that filled each of us with a freedom to be honest and open about our fears, our losses, our disappointments and our faith walks. It has been my experience that it is rare for a small group of people gathered together for the first time to feel safe enough to expose those inner thoughts so readily.  A testimony to the presence of our Lord when two or more gather in His Name.
It was a privilege to be a  part of those Spirit filled moments.  What blessings our Grace family has been given.  Reflection, renewal and now, a readiness to grow toward a deeper commitment to one another, to our ministries and to our God.
To Him Be The Glory!                                                                                                        ―Jane

Episcopal Youth Community:  This past weekend the youth of Grace gathered together to participate in Faith Alive. We welcomed Larry Boothby and two teens to Grace as team leaders, and they shared their stories of faith and life with us. We spent time in community, and in prayer. We discussed options regarding Youth Group, and Sunday School. We talked about what we like about church and what we might change if we were in charge. We went bowling and ate pizza, and performed a song for the whole group. All in all, I feel like we accomplished a lot in the way of building community, and learning more about what we feel about church and our small group we call Youth Group. I look forward to the future where we can speak openly and honestly about ourselves personally and corporately, and the interconnectedness of our relationships throughout the parish and the diocese.                                                                                                        ―Nick

Being the Body:  Our discipleship program meets again this Saturday, 28 September, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.  (Lunch is included.)  The focus is on Living Together:  Authentic Christian Community in the 21st Century.  Even if you have never come to one of our programs, come to this one, for a primary focus will be on how to form small groups for mutual growth and ministry, and this is an area of focused identified in the Faith Alive weekend as top-of-mind in the parish.

A Matter of Experience

Grace Episcopal Church
Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Grace Notes
19 September 2013

How do we experience faith?  We will explore this during the Faith Alive weekend, starting tomorrow.  Faithful Christians who have the same struggles are traveling to be with us to share their own experience of God.
Experience matters.  This is pretty obvious if you spend a few minutes to watch the “debate” between two comics—one a professed atheist and one a professed Christian—found here:  (There are one or two crude words used.)  http://www.upworthy.com/a-debate-between-an-atheist-and-a-christian-has-quite-a-surprising-result?g=2 This isn’t really a debate.  People aren’t exchanging and critiquing ideas and arguments.  They are exchanging feelings.  The atheist (who in effect says that he will choose damnation if God exists and doesn’t meet his expectations) describes a conversion experience (to atheism) based on a confusion between the question “how” and the question “why”.  The Christian—who knows the Bible pretty well—tries to meet these objections by testifying to who Jesus is, but in doing so he describes God in terms of cultural phenomena.  They both ignore that God is not a cultural phenomenon, that faith is not a cultural phenomenon, and that we don’t judge God according to our expectations.  He reveals His.
But—and here’s the catch—most people aren’t really going to engage in debate, and aren’t well-equipped to do so (notwithstanding the admonition of 1 Peter 3.15 that we are to be ready to offer a testimony to the hope that is within us).  What people are more likely to respond to is us sharing our experience of faith.  If they are open to such sharing it will plant seeds to allow them to examine their own experience.  Maybe then they’ll ask real questions about God, about who He is, rather than about who He is not.  Come this weekend and witness how this is done.  Experience this sharing yourself.

Urgent call for prayer warriors!  The prayer vigil for the Faith Alive weekend begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday (today), and lasts until 4 p.m. tomorrow (Friday).  We need people to sign up for the following hours on Friday:  1 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m.  Keep the vigil going to cover our guests and all of us with prayer, to lift the parish up to God, that we may be protected and may receive new life in and by the Holy Spirit.

Grace Abounds:  Please thank Jim Gardner and Mary Snyder for the coffee hours this past Sunday.  Please thank Bobbie May for her work weeding around the grounds.
There are many people to be thanked for all of the work that has gone into making our Faith Alive weekend a reality.  A complete listing will be forthcoming, but for now please thank to two co-chairmen of the effort:  Fr. John Ambelang and Tom Wright.
